On February 1, 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj, along with his advisor Kavi Kalash, was captured by Mughal forces led by Muqarrab Khan at Sangameshwar.
He was presented before Aurangzeb, who offered him clemency if he converted to Islam and surrendered his forts. Sambhaji refused, and he and Kavi Kalash were subjected to brutal torture over a period of weeks.
The torture included gouging out their eyes, tearing out their tongues, and skinning them alive. Despite the extreme pain, Sambhaji refused to convert or reveal the locations of his forts and hidden treasure.
Finally, on March 11, 1689, after enduring unspeakable cruelty, Sambhaji was beheaded at Tulapur on the banks of the Bhima River. His body was cut into pieces and thrown to dogs. His death marked a turning point in the Maratha struggle against the Mughals.
